It has the collaboration of 57 leading industrial companies based in the Basque Country and is aimed at startups from all over the world that apply disruptive technological solutions such as robotics, IoT, Big Data, additive manufacturing, or augmented reality to industrial, energy, health, and food chain organizations.

BIND 4.0 is looking for the best technological projects from startups, with the aim of fulfilling a dual objective. On the one hand, helping large companies accelerate innovation and boosting and improving their competitiveness through collaboration with startups, as a source of agile and efficient innovation. And, on the other hand, for startups to accelerate their arrival on the market in the hands of large international benchmark companies with direct access to the Basque industrial ecosystem.

BENEFITS AND FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM

The acceleration program has an annual call in which participating startups will get at least one paid contract for the development of one or more pilot projects with BIND 4.0 partner companies. And that is not all, the selected startups also get the following:

  • Participate in networking activities with the driving companies and public agents to facilitate the immersion of startups in the industrial ecosystem.
  • They have a mentoring service provided by world-class professionals, as well as a complete training program for the development of the skills and abilities needed to succeed in the industrial field.
  • They have access to different sources of funding and economic aid, as well as free workspace in the BICs (Business and Innovation Centers) of the Basque Country.
  • They will present their projects to the Venture Club, an investors’ club, aligned with the specialization of the accelerator, whose aim is to reinforce support services and promote contact between participating start-ups and specialized investment entities.

5 YEARS, 130 PROJECTS

BIND 4.0 is now in its fifth edition and, since its creation, has accelerated more than 130 startups and promoted the development of more than 200 projects, with a turnover of more than €6.5 million. This public-private initiative of the Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment, which is managed through the SPRI Group and its UpEuskadi platform of the Basque entrepreneurship ecosystem, has become a benchmark for open innovation and acceleration of Industry 4.0 worldwide.

The platform has been selected as the winner of the 14th edition of the European Business Promotion Awards, organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, in the category of improving the business environment. And it was one of the platforms selected by the international consultancy firm Gartner to drive innovation in industrial ecosystems.

JME Ventures is an early-stage investment fund based in Madrid. Its investments focus on early-stage (pre-seed to series A) Spanish companies, or companies founded by Spaniards, that are tech-focused and have outstanding traction. Javier Alarcó (CEO) and José Manuel Entrecanales are the founding partners of the venture capital fund.

The fund specializes in the technology sector, targeting both B2B and B2C with stakes of between €500,000 and €4 million, acquiring between 10% and 20% of the company’s capital. It aims to invest in around eight companies per year with the potential to turn them into an exit within five to seven years. To this end, it seeks a combination of team, product/business model and market that will enable them to achieve the above goal.

JME Ventures carries out a detailed research and analysis process prior to investing in companies. One of their key points is that they try to make fast decisions to make the financing process as painless as possible. It currently manages three funds with a total of more than €110 million. The fund has invested in 30 startups with great projection and growth in the Spanish ecosystem. Some examples are Flywire, Lingokids, Genially, Odilo, Emjoy, Ironhack, Worldsensing and Jobandtalent. They have also made seven exits: the sale of Saluspot to Telefónica, of Dexma to one of the company’s partners, of Flywire to the Singapore sovereign wealth fund in summer 2018, the sale of Jetlore to Paypal, the sale of Reply.ai to Kustomer, etc.

Berriup is the first Startup Accelerator with private initiative in the Basque Country. It was founded in 2015, by local entrepreneurs to encourage the development of new businesses.

Through its calls, twice a year, Berriup chooses different projects to be part of its acceleration program. Indifferently of the sector or the typology of the team, Berriup is committed to innovative and revolutionary initiatives with a passionate team behind and eager to turn their idea into a reality.

They have already made 10 calls, where the winners receive:

  • 50K in exchange for 10% of the company
  • Training and advice for entrepreneurial teams in charge of our network of mentors.
  • A Coworking space
  • Belonging to the BerriUp community with more than 100 outstanding members: entrepreneurs, company managers, mentors, etc.

The selected teams in each call are settled for 16 weeks in the Berriup coworking space in San Sebastián, with the aim of working on the validation of their business model, demonstrating its viability and its place in the market.

In this period, the Berriup team helps startups in secondary matters and advisory efforts so that they can focus on those tasks that do add value to the project.

The teams have to be personally in the coworking space, which help them training as well as contacting more often with the network of mentors. Also, this allows accelerated companies to share experiences in the same work environment from which new proposals for collaboration and mutual support usually arise.

Berriup offers its experience in innovation development and entrepreneurship to SMEs, as an external consultant, performing personalized services to each company: either with internal development programs (intrapreneurship), or with external programs (open innovation). In this way they collaborate with companies to achieve new business lines, promote their digital transformation and the development of the business fabric. Berriup has already analysed more than 700 projects.

Nowadays through this method, it has more than 20 accelerated companies, a network of more than 30 professional mentors with a relevant trajectory, and a space of more than 500mts2 located in San Sebastián.

Sacyr has been working with startups on a regular basis, although without a formal program. During all this time, the company has had relationships with more than 100 startups with potential to apply their solutions to their business processes. That is why in 2018 it launched  Sacyr iChallenges  a program that offers a world of collaboration opportunities for agents of the innovative ecosystem, with an approach based on flexibility and the capacity to adapt to the proposals of the different innovative agents.

The outcome of challenges is usually associated with the creation of value and, in this sense, Sacyr is very open to exploring different schemes of monetization and collaboration together with other agents, with a win-win approach. The company offers ad hoc monetization schemes for each case of collaboration, ranging from the creation of joint ventures for joint marketing or the customer-supplier contractual relationship to co-investment, direct investment and other alternatives.

iChallenges is an open innovation program, key to Sacyr’s strategy for digital transformation and collaboration with the innovative ecosystem. Collaborations with entrepreneurs are always focused on solving specific business challenges. In addition, the multinational focuses its open innovation towards the resolution of specific challenges, seeking solutions together with other agents of the innovative ecosystem. The program is aimed at achieving, increasingly, a high quality of life for citizens, based on better infrastructure and better urban services.

In addition to the iChallenges program, Sacyr annually organizes the Sacyr Startups Innovation Awards, which recognize the best proposals developed by the innovative community for the urban infrastructure and services sector. These awards reach their ninth edition in 2019 and have identified some of the most innovative and disruptive startups on the market. This prize is awarded with a contribution of 50,000 Euro.

Sacyr offers innovative agents a wide variety of benefits, such as collaborating in the resolution of challenges with one of the main Spanish corporations in the infrastructure sector and with a presence in more than 20 countries or working with experts in the sector and with senior management. In addition, startups will have access to Sacyr’s sales and contact network, will be able to establish strategic relationships with the company, will have validation of the business model, as well as its acceleration, escalation and growth.
