You never quite know what you’ll need when you’re on the move. An energy boost on your way to the big meeting, a phone charger when you’re down to 7%, or a much-needed snack at the end of the night—your time in an Uber, Cabify or Taxi is sometimes the only chance you have to refuel and recharge on-the-go.

Enter Hangry, a start-up that wants to turn drivers’ vehicles into mobile convenience stores. The start-up was founded by Wassim Berro and Maurice Karam, two MBA students from Instituto de Empresa (ie) as a school project and has raised its first round of seed funding. The round was led by Sego Finance. Additional investment came from Demium Start-ups,Archipelago Next and local entrepreneurs Martin Varsavsky and Felix Ruiz. Hangry is also part of Lanzadera, the accelerator founded by Juan Roig, President of Mercadona

When everyone’s a passenger instead of a driver, the car experience really starts to change. As we spend more time in the car, we are hungrier for comfort, entertainment, and productivity, and this is where Hangry comes in, by bringing products like gum and phone chargers into the ride so you can have them there and then.

BUSINESS MODEL

Passengers scan the QR code with their phone camera or go to Hangry’s web (without downloading an app), browse the menu and checkout using cash, credit card or mobile payment options like Google pay and Apple Pay. Once they pay, the driver gets a notification on their phone that the transaction is complete and passes the items to the passenger.

For brands rideshare is an untapped marketing and distribution opportunity. Hangry is the only platform that offers product sampling, selling and media to Uber, Cabify and Taxi riders. Hangry works with brands looking for a new way to distribute new items and samples to an engaged audience and provides brands with rich analytics like demographics, time of day, location where the product was requested and consumer feedback.

Kellogg’s along with companies like Mondelez International, Red Bull and L’Oreal are using Hangry to distribute free and paid products to a captive audience on-the-go. Wassim Berro, Founder, added “Consumer needs are rapidly evolving to ‘right here right now’. Brands need to adapt in order to connect to their consumer in their moment of need.”

The start-up is operating in Madrid and plans to expand to Valencia and Barcelona later this year.
